So I’m finished painting for the day, and I
don’t think any of my colors are particularly fast drying, but I want to
save them and make sure that they don’t start to set up overnight, so that I can
reuse these daubs of color that I’ve laid out. So I have here a Masterson’s palette
box and I have several of these in different sizes that I’ve had for a
while. There are two things you can do. You can pop this into Tupperware or a
box like this, and you can put it in the freezer, which I used to do. And that
keeps the paint pretty fresh, you just have to take it out and let it defrost
for a little bit in the morning when you’re ready to start painting again. The
other thing that I’ve been doing more recently, for a while now, is I tape a
piece of paper towel that I folded up to the top of the box, the inside of the box.
And I have these bottles of essential oil of cloves.
So there’s clove, this is clove leaf oil and this is clove bud oil. And as far as
I understand, and from what I’ve experienced, either one will work. So what
I do is I have a folded up paper towel or something absorbent, sometimes a
cotton pad or a cotton swab if it’s a smaller box. And I take a little bit of
the essential oil, this one has a dropper. The other one, I just kind of shake out
onto the paper towel. I get a little bit in the dropper and I just drop it in
onto the paper towel. And then what happens is, clove oil has a compound in
it that’s an antioxidant. And the way that oil paint dries and hardens is
through oxidization. So if you expose the oil paint to clove oil in a small space
it will keep it from oxidizing. The fumes in the oil, that compound in the
essential oil kind of eats up the oxygen in the air inside the box. And
it keeps the paint’s fresh. Some of the earth colors will dry up more quickly
than the rest, but some of the colors will last, it seems, indefinitely.
They’ve lasted for months when I’ve been away traveling.
I just have this taped to the top of my box with the clove oil absorbed into the
paper towel, and then I just pop the palette into the box and put the lid
on, and then it should stay fresh.
