I have used light greens in the background
working from the background toward the foreground, just to establish where things are. But, now
that I’m actually getting into the painting what I want to do is I want to start working
from the middle values toward the darks. And, then we’ll go and move toward the lights.
So, the next thing I want to do is I want to start creating some of the dark tones.
And, one of the first things that I want to do is we have one area in this scene where
we have a near true black. And, that’s the inside oval of this pot here. So, I’m going
to establish that inside oval blackness so that I have a frame of reference for the darkest
tones that are going to be in our painting. Again, notice that I’m not being too concerned
at this point with making sure it’s absolutely perfect in shape. I just want to establish
a tone that will become a guideline for measuring. Everything else is going to be lighter than
this tone here, which is my black.
